Travel health

Heading out of the country? A pre-travel consultation helps you understand the health risks at your destination and what you can do to avoid them.

Why plan ahead

Every destination is different. Food and water safety, insect-borne illness, altitude, climate and the activities you plan all change the advice. Some vaccines need more than one dose spread over weeks, so we suggest seeing us as early as you can, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you leave. Last-minute travellers are still welcome to call, as we can often still help.

What we can help with
  • Reviewing your destinations, dates and planned activities
  • Recommending vaccines and medications that suit your itinerary and health
  • Advice on traveller's diarrhea, motion sickness, insect bite protection and malaria prevention
  • Food and water safety, sun protection and staying well on long flights
  • Putting together a travel health kit with the supplies you may need
What to bring to your visit
  • Your destinations and travel dates
  • Your vaccination records, if you have them
  • A list of your current medications and allergies
Good to know
  • Many travel vaccines are not covered by public health plans and may be paid for privately. Some insurance plans cover part of the cost, so check yours.
  • Some vaccines, such as yellow fever, are only given at designated centres. If you need one, we will point you in the right direction.
  • If you take regular medications, ask us how to carry them safely and what to do about time zones.
