Strep throat testing

Sore throat that will not go away? A quick test at the pharmacy can help show whether strep bacteria could be the cause.

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is a throat infection caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, which do not improve with antibiotics. Strep is different: it may need antibiotic treatment, so knowing the cause matters.

Who should consider a test
  • Sore throat with pain when swallowing
  • Fever, swollen tonsils or tender glands in the neck
  • A sore throat that is not improving, or a recent contact with someone who has strep
How the test works

A pharmacist gently swabs the back of your throat and tonsils. The swab is tested with a rapid test, and results are usually ready within a short time, so you can wait at the pharmacy. The swab can be uncomfortable for a moment but is quick.

After the test
  • If the test is positive: the pharmacist will explain your options, which may include a prescription where appropriate, or a referral to another provider.
  • If the test is negative: we will talk through symptom relief and when to see a doctor, since some cases need further testing.
